Press Release
July 20, 2006
SKAGWAY, AK - The White Pass & Yukon Route
Railroad (WP&YR) announced that it carried 6,689 passengers
on July 19, 2006 breaking the old daily record of 6,410 set
just 5 weeks ago on June 14, 2006.
Gary C. Danielson, President of the WP&YR
stated that, “We knew we would have a good day, however,
we had never expected our daily record to fall that fast --
it took us two years to surpass our previous record day!”
This is the 7th consecutive Wednesday carrying
more than 6,000 passengers. “Our Fraser trains and 4:30
trains are making all the difference”, Danielson added.
The 4 Fraser trains which make connections with motorcoaches
for a wide variety of combination tours carried a record 2,112
passengers on board. Two 4:30 Summit Excursions took advantage
of the beautiful weather, long summer day and pent-up demand
to carry 754 additional passengers.
With 5 ships in port carrying 11,000 passengers
along with independent motorcoach tours, it required a total
team effort to coordinate the movement of 12 trains and the
thousands of passengers and have it completed safely and efficiently.
“I’m very proud of our people and
their accomplishment in setting this new daily record,” Danielson
remarked.
The White Pass & Yukon Route narrow gauge
railway was built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush and
is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – a
designation shared with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower
and the Statue of Liberty. The WP&YR is North America’s
busiest tourist railroad, carrying over 430,000 passengers
in 2005.
White Pass & Yukon Route is a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Tri-White Corporation based in Toronto, Ontario.
The Tri-White Corporation is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange
as TWH.
