White Pass & Yukon Route
Sets a New One Day Ridership Record
SKAGWAY, AK – The White Pass and
Yukon Route Railroad proudly announced that it carried 4,888
passengers on June
11, breaking the old record of 4,736.
It took 5 ships from 4 different cruise lines in port; 7
train crews; 14 trains and every available diesel locomotive
and passenger coach to accomplish this feat.
Gary C. Danielson, President
of the WP&YR
stated that "It almost seems appropriate that it was a
beautiful, sunny day today – we couldn’t be more
thrilled about setting a new "high mark" for our
operations. Despite the challenges in the tourism industry,
this new record buoys our confidence for continued growth in
passenger volumes."
Danielson added, "I am so proud of
our team, and our relationships with our customers, which
makes a day like this
possible."
This week also saw a single day sales record
from one ship when the Star Princess sold over 1500 of its
passengers on
the train on Tuesday. Danielson said, "As new, larger
ships are being built, it taxes our present infrastructure
to its limits and this reinforces our decision to build an
additional 8 passenger cars for next season.
The White Pass & Yukon Route narrow gauge railway was
built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush and is an International
Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – a designation shared
with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.
The WP&YR railroad has carried more than 300,000 passengers
per year in its last 3 years making it Alaska’s most
popular shore excursion.
White Pass & Yukon Route is a wholly-owned
